Pharmacist or Nurse For Recommending Treatments on Skin Issues

June 28, 2018

This popped up in my head the other night, is the pharmacist or the doctor more accurate when it comes to recommending treatments for your skincare issues? Seriously think about. You have the pharmacist who went to school to study specifically medicine and how it works in or on the body, but then there is the doctor who went to school to study the human body, how it works and how it responds to medicine and manipulations.  I'll use myself as example on who can accurately diagnose and recommend the best products for your skincare issues?

Severe Allergic Reaction On Face
Last week while I was on vacation in Denver, Colorado I suffered a horrible allergic reaction on my face and part of my neck that I am pretty pissed about it. It all happened on my first day of vacation which was last week Tuesday hours after completing a hot yoga class at Yoga Pod. A couple hours after I left the yoga studio my face started tingling and I could feel bumps start to form. When I took a shower later that night I looked in the mirror and saw how my skin was changing. The next morning when I woke up I felt both sides of my face then looked in the mirror to see that my face and part of my neck had completely broken out in what looked like pimples. Pimples! WTF!

They were not pimples though. It was itchy and the skin was sensitive and all I thought was, WTF! Is this what I get for having good skin for almost 20 years? Tears :-( I mean I had a great yoga session and all. I sweated like I was l was a leaking faucet but was it that rented towel, yoga mat or either that cold towel with peppermint oil the instructor placed on my neck and part of my neck that fuc*ed me up?

Fast forward to this week Monday morning, both sides of my face chin were completely broken out in smaller bumps. By late afternoon my cheeks turned bright red and was highly irritating. After 4pm it got worse and by 9pm I debated going to go the ER or to Walgreen's to see if the pharmacist could help me. At 9:45pm I arrived at Walgreen's and had a consultation with the pharmacist.

Pharmacist Consultation
Arriving close to closing time I scurried through the aisles of Walgreen's seeking Benadryl and aloe gel then straight back towards the pharmacy. Noticing that the pharmacist was busy, I politely excused myself for interrupting her, asked her to take a look at my face and to please recommend products or some type of medicine to clear up this awfulness. She looked at my skin, asked me what happened and stated that indeed it was an allergic reaction. She recommended that I try the non-drowsy formula for Benadryl tablets or Claritin tablets (which doesn't work for me) as well as a face moisturizer by either Neutrogena or Aveeno with a SPF of 30 or more to protect my face.

The pharmacist said that it would take about a week to clear up. Purchasing exactly what she recommended I left the store without a bill from the pharmacist but a $27 receipt for aloe gel, Aveeno skin moisturizer and a 24 pack of Benadryl. But guess what happened the next morning? More inflammation which lead me to Urgent Care to see a doctor but I ended up seeing the Nurse Practitioner.

Nurse Practitioner Consultation
Tuesday morning my skin face felt like it was on fire and my emotions were heightened. Seriously. Is this what I get for using other people's skin issues as content ideas so I could encourage them (and myself) to do better with skincare regimens? The wild thoughts that go through your head when a shallow tragedy like this happens. My face and part of my neck had developed even more bumps and my cheeks were painful to the touch and felt hot. Washing my face was so painful that morning and I had no other choice but to go to Urgent Care. Arriving at Urgent Care an hour after I was supposed to be to work, the Nurse Practitioner entered the room and told me that indeed it was an allergic reaction.
benadryl stop itching cream

She recommended that I use the Benadryl stop itching cream, continue with the Benadryl tablets, she prescribed a 2.5% hydrocortisone cream and Zyrtec (which I did not purchase). The Nurse Practitioner said it would take 2-3 weeks for it to clear up. I left the clinic with a $252 bill as well as a receipts totaling $17 for the hydrocortisone cream and the Benadryl stop itching cream. Why did I even go to Urgent Care only to receive duplicate information and now a big bill to pay off?

Now that it is Thursday and the inflammation on my cheeks have calmed down a bit the bumps are still present. This experience makes me wonder, why go to a doctor or see a nurse when the pharmacist recommended the same types of products and medicine for my skin issues? Silly me. Now you know that both can diagnosis and recommend treatments for skincare issues but the pharmacist will not leave you with a $252 bill.

Review of Loelle Rose Flower Water

June 14, 2018
From the archives. Original post May of 2016. Refreshed and Revised June of 2018.
It is close to Summer and here in Wisconsin (and in Florida where this was originally writen) the hot heat causes for the skin to become either really oily or really thirsty because of the sun smothering it with heat. One of the things that I love the most is to mist my face with toner or some type of floral or fruit infused water. However this product is one that takes the cake for me. It was sent to me all the way from Sweden au gratis and I couldn't be any happier.

Obsession: Loelle Rose Flower Water 100ml $19

This Rose Flower Water spray created by the Swedish organic beauty brand Loelle has become my #1 go to. The only two ingredients the water consists of are roses and distilled water. It is light, airy and refreshing. It kinda feels like a light mist of Summer rain. The type of rain that is reminiscent to fresh cut grass and roses that have finally bloomed and the mid day rain comes down showering them with water, tapping them hard enough that it leaves a visible mists in the air and a smell so lovely that you want to simply step outside and breath it all in.

The consistency of this product is not too moist and doesn't feel like it has left a residue on the skin. I like that because I use this water as makeup setting spray and also a toner after a workout. As a makeup setting spray it enhances the full makeup look I created and the foundation looks the skin like topped off with a nice glow. When you press down on the top it mists the skin perfectly. At one point I was carrying this bottle around with me everywhere. It stayed in my car or in my bag. The 100ml size fit perfectly in my makeup bag... Kinda.

If you have yet to get your hands on Loelle products, trust me when I say, you are going to want this one out of all of them. Enjoy this goodie and purchase it on their website because it is definitely worth it. "Quality over quantity. I will try both."

No Caking Just Slaying. Natural Beauty For Summer

June 07, 2018
From the archives. Original post June of 2016. Refreshed and rewritten in June 2018.
I see multiple tutorials on contouring, highlighting, baking, caking, layers on top of layers of foundations and blushes and blah, blah, blah fu*ken blah and I am beyond annoyed. First off, it is Summer. That means that it is HOT as a guys balls in skinny jeans. No one needs to cake on 10lbs of makeup when the sun is clearly going to bake it into your skin.. If you're a natural beauty or faux beauty, there is still hope for you. Try these methods for great glowing skin this Summer.

Non-Oil Based Face Moisturizers with SPF
Obsession: Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel $26
face lotion, skin care, moisturizer
This moisturizer is very lightweight and comes in different sizes which is perfect for any budget. I for one purchase the $5 travel size that lasts about 2 months. The next size up is about $10 and will last you about 3 months.
Please remember that your skin needs moisturize all year round but during the summer your moisturize should either include sun blocking ingredients or an SPF. Just because the sun is shining, your highlighter is popping, the sun will get jealous and burn your ass thanks to those harmful hater UVA and UVB rays. Next up concealer.

Obsession: E.l.f. Cosmetics Perfect Blend Concealer $2
ELF Cosmetics, concealer, light coverage concealer
This concealer was a great find and was formulated with Summer in mind. It is creamy, lightweight, doesn't crease and is a nice cover up for those dark under eye circles. Unsure how to do it, simply draw 4 vertical lines from the bottom lash line towards the upper cheekbones. Take a small beauty blender and dab the concealer in and blend it out towards the sides of the nose, upper cheekbones and the outer corners of the eyes towards the temples. Done. Time to powder the face.

One of the best powders that I have been using for over 4 years is this mineralize powder because it is light weight, allows your skin to breath and gives you a bit of tint.
If your face is oily or combination this is the perfect powder for you. Remember the application method is to moisturize, concealer, powder then continue with the rest. Lets now add color to your lips.

Matte Lipstick
colour pop, lippie stix, lipstick

This creamy formula of the Lippie Stick amazes me every time I smoother my lips in it. The color is true and your lips are still moisturized with the matte, not shiny finish.
I do love lip gloss in the Summer but I hate that it is so hot outside that my face and my lips match each other. If you are going to wear lip gloss then be sure to line your lips so the color doesn't bleed or save yourself some time and get the lippie stick. Time for a bit of glow.

Obsession: NYX Cosmetics Illuminator Ritualistic $9
NYX cosmetics, highlighter
Out of all the NYX Cosmetic products I have tried and owned this pressed highlighter is the only one that doesn't make my skin respond with a rash. The feel of this illuminator is close to the Anastasia Beverly Hills which happens to be very soft and doesn't contain very large flecks of the color. It isn't as soft but close to it and the glow is pretty effortless. To create a seamless and natural glow use a fan brush and swipe it on the upper cheekbones, above the cupid's bow and down the bridge of the nose. Now after your slayed your face for the day and the night starts to come be sure to do a facial.

face mask, LUSH Cosmetics, skincare

face mask, skin care, LUSH Cosmetics

Great skincare starts with a great skin regimen and one happens face masks. Cleansing is great but masks both help to remove and put back in the ingredients that the skin is lacking. I for one love the "Don't Look At Me" face mask. It is one of my favorites because of the grounded rice that acts as the exfoliating agent which gently scrubs away the top layer of dead skin. The lemon juice is known to be a natural astringent that also reduces the appearance of dark spots. The mask is just great because after you rinse your face with cold water the surface is smooth and the pores are unclogged. Go to LUSH and ask for a sample.

Everyone please stop caking on makeup during the Summer. Embrace your natural beauty a little more this Summer.

Hair Conditioner Picks

June 03, 2018

From the archives. Original Post May of 2014. Refreshed and rewritten in June 2018
It's almost Summer and that means it is the season of wet'n go hair. So what are the best products for curly, natural hair that has never been chemically straightened that can also be described as coarse, dry, frizzy, and fragile hair. This is my hair type currently. It's a blend of the blood line of part Irish, Cherokee Indian, Blackfoot Indian and a whole lot of African American. It has a tight and defined spiral pattern commonly found in 3b hair and 4a hair. 3b has a spiral curl and 4a has a coil pattern. You can say, I have a spiral/coil pattern that is gorgeous when the right products are applied. For those who have similar hair, here are my 2 top picks for leave-in conditioners that I am currently obsessed with.

Obsession 1 Regis Design Line Ultimate Radiance Leave-in Conditioner $11

If you like the content please SUBSCRIBE or Buy Me A Coffee:-)

It is one of the best conditioners that I have had in a long time. I found this product while I was working at Regis Salon. One bottle will seriously last you months if you use the proper amount of conditioner. Meaning a few pumps to the entire hair is enough. More than that will cause the hair to feel grubby and very thick due to product overload. The key ingredient is keratin protein.
This is also a go to product for chemically straightened or naturally curly hair that is thirsty and color treated hair.

Obsession 2 MOA Melaleuca Omega-3 Argan Leave-in Conditioner $20

Out shopping and BAM! This little bottle of goodness was spotted in the speciality hair aisle at T.J. Maxx. It is a very light weight conditioner which leaves me guessing if I should even use it as a leave-in conditioner. Occasionally I find myself using it more as a cream moisturizer to apply with a gel when I do a wet'n go style. It leaves the hair a little hydrated with natural yet enhanced shine.

Application Method

  1. Wash and condition hair with a moisturizing shampoo like Redken All Soft Shampoo and Conditioner.
  2. Use the recommended amount of shampoo to cleanse but apply 2x times the amount of conditioner to evenly coat and saturate hair.
  3. Comb conditioning through the hair with a wide tooth comb with. Apply a plastic shower cap for approximately 10-15 minutes.
  4. Rinse hair thoroughly.
  5. Use a wide teeth comb to divide hair into 4 even quadrants.
  6. Spritz entire hair with 4 even pumps of Regis Design Line Ultimate Radiance or 6 even pumps of MOA Melaleuca Omega-3 Argon Leave-In Conditioner to the 4 quadrants of the hair.
  7. Comb through and proceed with normal style regimen.
Now as a professional cosmetologist I like to try some of everything but it depends on the budget. "Quality over quantity. Fuck it. I'll try both."
